Report: 11 Die After Grasshoppers Swarm in Sudan

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Eleven people died and thousands were taken to hospital with breathing difficulties after a swarm of grasshoppers invaded a town in central Sudan, the government-owned Al-Anbaa newspaper reported on Saturday.



The paper cited health authorities in Wad Medani, capital of the central al-Jezira state, as saying an epidemic of what they considered to be asthma had afflicted 1,685 people since October 22, all of whom had since been cured. The authorities also said 11 people had died from the breathing difficulties.


"The appearance of the epidemic is linked to the unprecedented increase in the grasshopper insects," the daily quoted the health authorities as saying.


Resident Joseph Mogum in Wad Medani, about 110 miles southeast of the capital Khartoum, said the grasshoppers gave off a strong smell which caused breathing problems.


The United Nations (news - web sites) Food and Agriculture Organization (news - web sites) said on October 21 that swarms of locusts were threatening crops in northeastern Sudan, Mauritania and northern Niger, but it was not clear if it was the same species that was affecting Wad Medani in central Sudan.


Mogum said the grasshoppers were smaller than the usual species that appear during the rainy season in Sudan and destroy vegetation.


Heavy rains in Africa's largest country over the past three months have caused floods that have killed at least 20 people.

the only appocalypse is malthusian and that IS our own doing
and by no means undoable, if only just bearly.

the four riders are direct colletive consiquence of incentives
created collectively by individual priorities

and the proccess is quite tangable

human population level
automobile reliance
forrest clearcutting

are the three principal causes
of appocalyptic conditions

and the mechanisms by which they do so are not only tangable
but not all THAT difficult to observe

Exactly! We can change or do anything if we *believe*
I would however say that there are more than those three reasons for apocolyptic conditions, including more spiritual reasons, like preperation for the Ascension, and Gaia. (Earth mother)

perceptions all in turn influence both our individual and collective
priorities. that is why story tellers and tribal rememberers
were always so honored and important to societies that live closer to
the land then do the dominant cultures of today.

i was refering only to primal causes within the tangable mechanism
of which there may be several others
certainly the romantacising and rewarding of aggressiveness is a major
detriment and a major source of it
aggressiveness, belligerance, fanatacism, thise are the sources of harm
the motivations if you can call them that.

paradise is a world where everyone NONaggressively does exactly
and uniquely their own origeonal well thought out and conscounsiously
considered 'thing': dreaming their own dreams, thinking their own thoughts,
beilieving their own personal beliefs, whithout ever beating each
other over the head or attempting to coerce each other's perceptions.

there we ONLY 'allways' be wars and brutality as long as we keep trying
to tie morality to belief.

faith is a good thing when it is not about names and deffinicians. it becomes a very bad thing when it is used as a substitiute for objectiviety.

not just religeous faith, but political and economic as well
